Are referrals ever needed?
Yes, a verbal referral is needed from your PCP to see a contracted specialist. A referral is not needed to see an OB/GYN, PCP, chiropractor, optometrist, or an ophthalmologist for a routine eye exam.
If you have a Point-of-Service plan, a verbal referral from your PCP is not needed to see a non-plan specialist if you are utilizing your out-of-network benefits.
